Official Urges to Curb Land Erosion Along Middle Reaches of Yellow River
Qian Zhengying, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has called for greater efforts to be made to protect the ecological environment in the sandy areas in the middle reaches of the Yellow River Valley.
The efforts to curb land erosion by returning farmland to forests and grassland should be integrated with restructuring of the local economy and enhancing the living standards of local farmers and herdsmen, the vice-chairman said.
In early November, Qian led a group of academicians, experts and officials from the Ministry of Water Resources and the Yellow River Water Conservancy Commission, to inspect badly eroded areas in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Shaanxi Province.
Qian spoke highly of local people for their decades-long efforts in curbing soil erosion and restoring vegetation in the area. She urged people to care about the personal interests of local villagers in order to enhance their enthusiasm in protecting the local ecological environment and achieve a sustainable development.
Local villagers should be taught to apply advanced technology and methods in ecological environmental protection, the official said. She also advised Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi to work together to curb land erosion.
