Macao SAR Preparing for Anniversary Celebration

The government of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China has recently formed a working group to manage the celebrations marking the first anniversary of the SAR's founding.

Members of the working group come from about 10 government departments to ensure that the celebrating activities are carried out in a well coordinated way.

Macao, which had been under Portuguese rule for hundreds of years, returned to the motherland on December 20, 1999 and became a special administrative region of China.

A host of official and non-governmental activities are expected to be held to celebrate the first anniversary.

Cheong Kuok Va, secretary for security of the Macao SAR government, has issued an order requiring that all police cancel their holidays in December.
