Survey Scrutinizes State of Internet Users

On-line shopping remained slow despite the fact that the number of Internet users in China is doubling every six months.

A survey conducted by a Beijing-based consulting company in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai--the country's most wired cities--showed that no more than 10 percent of Internet surfers purchased products on the Web over the past three months.

"The proportion of netizens who fall in the 20-25 age group is larger than any other age group," the survey said.

The average monthly income of surveyed Internet users is between 2,000 yuan to 3,000 yuan (US$242-362).

A majority of respondents complained about the slow speed of the Internet Webs and high fees, but they said they were satisfied with most Web contents.

Chinese netizens spend more than two hours online every day. Guangzhou is the most expensive city to surf the net while Shanghai is the cheapest.

Most surfers spend their Internet time on leisure pursuits, and only a few proportion use the Internet for educational purposes, the survey discovered.

Sina.com is the most popular portal in Beijing and Guangzhou while Shanghai online is most popular among Shanghai netizens.

Finance and economics website tend to enjoy the greatest popularity in Beijing and Shanghai, with Homeway.com drawing the greatest proportion of hits.

The survey also revealed that Yahoo! is the most popular search engine throughout China.
