US Court Rejects Republican Request to Stop Hand Recount in Florida

A US federal court in Miami November 13 rejected a Republican lawsuit and refused to stop hand recounts of presidential votes in some counties in Florida.

US District Judge Donald Middlebrooks said that stopping hand recounts is not a matter for federal courts to decide and it is the business of state court.

"While I share a desire for finality, I do not believe it is served" by involving a federal court, he said after hearing arguments from lawyers representing Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush and his Democratic rival Vice President Al Gore.

The judge's decision came hours after Florida's Republican Secretary of State Katherine Harris ordered that all counties in the state must finish counting votes by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
