Ebola Spreads to Masindi District in Western UgandaThe deadly Ebola hemorrhagic fever has spread to Masindi district in western Uganda, neighboring Gulu district in the north, Uganda Health Ministry confirmed Monday."Masindi district reported four suspected cases who have died in one household, with one case was confirmed to be positive for Ebola," said a press release signed by Director General of Health Services Francis Omaswa. No new cases in Mbarara district in the south have been reported in the past week, where five cases were identified with four deaths, said the release. "Investigation of reported suspected cases continues in different parts of the country, and so far Ebola cases have only been confirmed in Gulu, Mbarara and Masindi districts," it said. In the past two days, 11 new cases have been reported in the country with five deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 329 and the death toll to 110, according to the release. The total number of patients who have fully recovered from Ebola is 191 in Gulu, it said. It is the first time that Ebola has stricken Uganda. The outbreak of the disease took place in southern Sudan in 1979, and it hit Kikwit, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing over 300 people in 1995. |
