Clinton, Barak Meet to Discuss How to End Violence

US President Bill Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Sunday discussed how to end six weeks of bloody clashes between Israelis and Palestinians and explore ways to resume the peace process, the White House said.

Emerging from a meeting of more than two hours with Clinton at the White House after arriving earlier in the day, Barak said the main goal now was to end the violence by implementing a cease-fire agreement brokered by Clinton at an emergency summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt on October 17.

Details of the talks were not immediately available. Clinton had similar talks with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on Thursday.

Barak was originally scheduled to have separate talks with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and National Security Adviser Sandy Berger£¬ but the meetings were canceled due to the delay in his arrival because of a hijacking crisis at home.

The prime minister will leave Washington for Chicago to attend a meeting of US Jewish leaders on Monday, and then travel to London on Tuesday.

President Clinton Monday will leave for Brunei to attend the 8th Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders' informal meeting and then go to Vietnam for a historic visit.
