Jiang Makes 4-point Proposal to Boost China-Cambodian Ties
Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin made a four-point proposal to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen November 13 in Phnom Penh, aiming to further enhance and consolidate the traditional good-neighborly and friendly relations between the two countries.
Jiang's remarks came in his meeting with Hun this afternoon.
The Chinese head of state first proposed that the exchanges between the two countries should be continued and maintained at all levels.
Jiang warmly invited Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk, Prime Minister Hun Sen and other Cambodian leaders to visit China again at convenient time, stressing the two sides could also communicate with each other via regional and multilateral occasions.
The economic and trade cooperation between the two countries should be put "in a more important position," Jiang said.
More concrete and practical measures should be adopted to implement the cooperation agreements already inked by the two sides, Jiang said. He suggested that the cooperation be continued in the formation of joint and cooperative ventures, project contracting, labor service and other fields and the cooperation be expanded in agriculture, culture, tourism, education and other areas.
Jiang also suggested that the bilateral cooperation in personnel training should be strengthened.
Jiang finally called on the two countries to enhance cooperation in regional and international affairs.
Hun, joining with other Cambodian leaders, described Jiang's visit as "historical."
He told Jiang that the four-point proposal is "a precious gift" for the whole Cambodian people. "Cambodia attaches importance to its ties with China and considers such a relationship is of long-term and strategic significance for our country," he said.
Hun also highly commended the assistance of China to the Cambodian people.
Hun briefed Jiang on the domestic situation of Cambodia.
Jiang arrived here earlier Monday for a two-day state visit. Cambodia is the second-leg of his three-nation trip in Southeast Asia.
