Exhibition Highlights Shenzhen's Achievements

An exhibition showcasing the achievements Shenzhen has made since it became a special economic zone 20 years ago opened Monday.

Zou Jiahua, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), and other leaders of the Chinese government participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking its opening.

Designed as part of a range of activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the exhibition has 10 zones featuring the earth-shaking changes Shenzhen has experienced from a small town with a population of 20,000 to a boomtown facing Hong Kong across a river.

On August 26 of 1980, Shenzhen, which falls under the jurisdiction of south China's Guangdong Province, was approved by the State Council to be China's first special economic zone.
