Beijing Commemorates French Poet Prevert

More than 100 people gathered at Beijing Foreign Studies University over the weekend to commemorate the late well-known French poet Jacques Prevert.

Born in 1900, Prevert wrote over 30 volumes of poems, 543 songs and 55 plays in his lifetime, depicting the daily lives of common people in French society. Among his works of art, "Paroles" and "Les Enfants du Paradis" are the most popular. He died in 1977.

Chen Haosu, head of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said the activity would inspire Chinese readers to know more about the poet and benefit cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Daniere Gaiglia Laster, a French writer, and Arnaud Laster, a literary critic, delivered papers titled "Anti-war Prevert" and "Anti-tradition Prevert", respectively, to remember the French writer.

College students from the two countries also put on stage several of Prevert's literary works.
