Cartier Sues Chinese Company for Web Site Registry

Cartier International B. has recently charged a Chinese company with registering a web site address with its name, and is asking for an open apology and 200,000 yuan (about US$24,000) in compensation.

Cartier discovered that the Beijing Guowang Information Company registered a web address with "Cartier" on the World Wide Web.

Guowang also registered website addresses with other brand names such as "IKEA.com.cn" and "NIKE.com.cn."

Guowang argued that there is no law in the country forbidding these actions. It refused any intermediation efforts from the court.

The Beijing No.1 Intermediate Court is expected to pronounce a judgment in a few days.

Cartier, established in the Netherlands in 1847, is a well-known dealer in luxuries, such as jewelry, clocks and watches, perfume, cosmetics and fashion clothing, recognized as a symbol of fashion and fortune in the world.
