One-Tenth of Chinese Population HBV Positive

Anti-HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) Day was reported November 11 publicizing the knowledge for prevention of HBV in 13 Chinese cities including Beijing and Guangzhou.

Hepatitis B is a deadly disease from HBV, a highly infectious virus 1 hundred times over HIV causing AIDS. Statistics show the virus brings an annual death toll of at least one million, ranking 9th among major death toll causes throughout the world.

In China, some 120 million people tested have proved HBV positive, about 1/10 of the Chinese population. Of these, 20 million suffer from chronicle hepatitis, with an annual 300,000 of deaths from hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccine in China has been proved safe and effective, playing an important role in hepatitis prevention, especially infection from mother to baby. Fifteen years' clinic practice in Shanghai shows that after taking vaccine children carrying virus have dropped from 10% to 1% less.

People who have got infected with the virus are in great need of effective treatment and help from doctors to prevent the disease from developing into cirrhosis or liver cancer. It is reported similar publicity activities to spread the knowledge for prevention of HBV will be held in China every year.
