WB-Aided Epidemic Control Project in China's Ethnic RegionsA World Bank-funded epidemic prevention project, started five years ago in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has produced successful results. The program to modernize epidemic control centers and equipment, and upgrade training service staff has reached every village in the region densely populated by many ethnic groups. At village level, even in outlying areas, each villager is treated with an individual disposable syringe, and each village clinic has a sterilizing machine to sterilize medical equipment. The rate of infection caused by contaminated syringes has decreased from more than 70 percent five years to less than 30 percent today. This change has come about through improved public awareness of disease prevention techniques and an increase in the number of disease control staff. |
