China to Co-sponsor Human Capacity Building Meeting in 2001

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Sunday in Bandar Seri Begawan that China will co-sponsor together with Brunei the APEC high-level meeting on human capacity building in 2001.

The Chinese minister told the 12th ministerial meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) that China welcomes the participation by senior officials and renowned personages of the scientific and technological field and the business communities in the meeting.

He said the meeting will provide a forum for the discussion on the important matters of human resources development (HRD) capacity building of APEC and will help produce more results in the region's HRD in the new century.

Tang said capacity building should be a priority area in the HRD of APEC. To meet the requirement of the new century and new economy, it is highly necessary to enhance the HRD capacity building of all members, particularly that of the developing members.

The Chinese minister said HRD is a part and parcel of China's strategy of social and economic development, and China has adopted a series of positive measures to nurture and develop human resources market, establish social security system, carry out re- employment projects and develop China's western region.

At the sideline of the two-day ministerial meeting, the Chinese minister also met with his counterparts from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Peru.
