China Calls on APEC Members to Seize OpportunitiesChina calls on APEC members to work together, step up cooperation and stand up to the challenges and seize opportunities brought about by the new economy.Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said on Sunday at the 12th APEC ministerial meeting that the new economy has gone beyond the liberalization of trade and investment and Ecotech. Cooperation in this field will help promote the sharing of the progress in human civilization, science and technology, narrow their gap and achieve common prosperity, the minister said. For the vast number of developing countries, it is imperative to grasp the opportunities for the development of the new economy and modernize their economy by cashing in on the progress in IT (information technology), said the minister. He said new economy is fundamentally a revolution driven by scientific and technological progress and oriented toward man and it will surely become a major driving force for the world economy. Tang added that it takes a gradual process for the new economy to develop, and the new economy and the traditional economy are not mutually exclusive. The Chinese minister proposed to work out a working plan to further deepen the APEC cooperation in this field and achieve substantive progress.
