Global Eye Doctors Meet in Guangzhou

Nearly 1,000 ophthalmologists from more than 30 countries gathered Sunday in Guangzhou to explore ways to treat increasing eye diseases in Asia and Africa.

At the 12th Conference of Afro-Asia Council on Ophthalmology, eye experts from Asia, Africa, Europe, South and North America and Oceania are focusing on world ophthalmology progress, especially in the developing countries, towards the 21st century.

According to conference sources, some 180 million people have eyesight defects in the world and around six million people suffer from different kinds of ophthalmologic diseases in China.

China, which has been working hard to solve eye problems for the poor and those in the remote region, has promised to eliminate blindness caused by cataract and glaucoma in 20 years, said Zhang Wenkang, Chinese minister of Health, at the conference.

Established 44 years ago, the Afro-Asia Council of ophthalmology is a prestigious organization in the field of ophthalmology in Afro-Asia region. The council hosts a regular academic conference every four years.
