EU Policy Chief Calls for Faster Eastward Expansion

EU security and foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Saturday called on European Union's 15 member countries to continue its eastward expansion.

Addressing a regional conference of the economic circle held in Barcelona, Solana said the a pivotal issue in EU's external relations is to quicken up the pace in the regional bloc's eastward expansion, or helping an early entry of EU membership applicants.

Calling for joint EU defense efforts, Solana suggested to set up a European armed force that can carry out peacekeeping mission anywhere in the world.

He also expressed satisfaction with the political situation on the Balkans. He voiced EU's concern over the situation in the Middle East and expressed hope that the European Union can contribute to the peace process there.

Solana also said Europe pays much attention to keep good relations with Russia and hopes that China enters the World Trade Organization in an early date.
