China Green Food Expo 2000 Opens in Kunming

China Green Food 2000 Exposition opened Saturday in Kunming, capital city of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Over 500 exhibitors from around the country displayed over 1, 000 varieties of green food products at the expo, which included cereal, edible oil, fruit, vegetables, live-stock, aquatics, diary products and beverages.

Sources with the organizing committee of the expo said that the expo demonstrates the achievement of China's green food industry over the decade.

China has developed some 1,360 varieties of green food products. The output of green cereal, fruits and vegetable products weighed 10 million tons and was worth 49.4 billion yuan (US$5.9 billion) last year. The industry revenue in 1999 was 30.2 billion yuan (US$3.6 billion).

China's green food project has been recognized by international organizations, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific (ESCAP) and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, as one of the 20 most successful development modes for global sustainable agriculture.

The four-day exposition which was co-sponsored by China Green Food Development Center, China Association of Green Food and the Yunnan Provincial Agricultural Department, has been participated by officials and business people from France, Germany, Japan, the United States, Belgium, Indonesia, India, Cambodia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The ESCAP will put on a symposium on green food in the Asia Pacific region and information systems on sustainable agriculture during the show.
