China Set to Tap Nuclear Energy

China is set to accelerate the development of radiation technology in forthcoming years to promote the peaceful application of nuclear energy£¬according to today's China Daily.

"Radiation technology has been used in health care£¬ pharmaceuticals£¬ new material manufacture and environmental protection"said Zhang Huazhu£¬chairman of the China Atomic Energy Agency£¬at a five-day International Symposium on Radiation Technology and Its Applications which ended Friday.

Zhang said£¬"the technology will be at the top of the agenda for our development plan in the new century."

By now£¬the radiation sector in China's market has reached an annual production capacity of more than 1 billion yuan £¨about 120 million U.S. dollars£©£¬ a very small percentage compared with the figures in other developed countries such as the United States and Japan.

"China should also endeavor to promote the commercialization of research and the application of technology £¬ rather than make it a direct government-funded sector£¬" said Din Dayal Sood £¬ director of the Physical and Chemical Sciences Department of IAEA£¬an international organization to promote the peaceful use of atomic energy globally.

China's radiation section will realize an annual turnover of 10 billion yuan within the next five years£¬said Zhang at the five- day International Symposium on Radiation Technology and its Application £¬which ended yesterday.
