Ebola Death Toll Rises to 100 in UgandaEight Ebola deaths have been reported in the country in the past two days, bringing the death toll to 100, Ugandan Health Ministry announced Thursday."Five deaths have occurred in Gulu district in northern Uganda and three in southern district of Mbarara," the ministry said in a press release. Another 11 new cases have been admitted to hospital in Gulu in the same period, with no new cases reported in Mbarara, and the total number of people affected now reaches 300, the release said. According to the release, "we continue to receive reports of suspected cases from other parts of the country and these are being investigated promptly." "So far, Ebola cases have only been confirmed in Gulu and Mbarara districts," it said. It is the first time that Ebola has stricken Uganda. The outbreak of the disease took place in southern Sudan in 1979, and it hit Kikwit, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, killing over 300 people in 1995. |
