Anti-Nuclear Activists to Converge in Indian CapitalOver 500 anti-nuclear activists from across the world, including 60 from Pakistan, will converge here for a three-day peace and disarmament meeting beginning on November 11, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Thursday.This will be the first meeting of its kind since New Delhi conducted the Pokhran nuclear tests in May 1998. "It is a veritable peace fest -- a forum to exchange views and experiences, express solidarity and draw up future plans," former Indian Navy Chief Admiral L Ramdas, convener of this "National Convention for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace," was quoted as saying. Besides striving to establish a coalition of anti-nuclear weapons activists, the convention would also discuss the sharp differences within the anti-nuke movement on India's stand on the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), said the PTI. Issues to be discussed during the meeting also include adverse security consequences of weaponization, its social and economic cost, effects of nuclear tests, and moral and legal arguments against the evil of nuclear weapons, the PTI added. The convention will conclude with a public demonstration and a cultural extravaganza. |
