China Becomes World's Largest Container Producer

A survey recently issued by the international maritime research organization revealed that China has become the world's largest container producer.

The survey said containers made in China have occupied 70 percent of the world market.

A total of 1.35-million-TEU (twenty feet equivalent unit) containers were produced in 1999, of which 1.06-million from the total amount of TEU containers were made in China, 132,000 TEUs were made in southeastern Asian countries and 96,000 TEUs were made in west Europe.

The Britain Ocean Shipping Consulting Company also predicted that the containers handling capacity in China's ports will climb to top Asia in the next 15 years.

Statistics show that the world handled 210 million TEU containers in 1999, with 45 percent in Asia.
