Israel Tries to Pass Law on Selection of PM in Case of AssassinationThe Israeli Knesset (parliament) on Wednesday passed the preliminary reading of a bill stating that no new election will be held for a prime minister if he or she is assassinated.The Knesset voted 54 to 2 in favor of the bill, which was submitted by Yosef Lapid, leader of the Shinui party. In case a prime minister is assassinated, there will not be a new election and a successor will be selected from among the cabinet ministers, said the bill. Lapid said the present situation in Israel and the region might encourage various elements to harm the prime minister in an attempt to bring about a new election in Israel and subsequently a change in government policies. The bill has to pass through three readings in the Knesset before becoming a law. |
