Chinese Dominate Women's Singles at Junior Badminton Worlds

China displayed a brilliant performance by collecting seven seats in the top eight of the women's singles event at the World Junior Badminton Championships on November 9 in Guangzhou.

The last quarter-final berth went to unseeded Yu-Chin Chien from Chinese Taipei, who ousted China's fourth seed Liu Jian 7-5, 7-2, 8-7 for a showdown with Liu's teammate Zhu Lin on Friday.

Yu Jin, the 17-year-old Asian junior champion who lives in Guangzhou for seven years, rallied past Liu Xiao of Singapore 4-7, 8-6, 7-1, 7-3 before an enthusiastic home crowd.

"I did not play well in the first set because of the pain in my leg," said Yu, who was injured in an early round match. "I was not satisfied with my performance today."

Though playing as top seed in women's singles, Yu said she was under no pressure. "I am confident that I can win the championship," she said.

Other Chinese advancing to the round of eight included second seed Wei Yan, third seed Wang Rong and unseeded Li Wenyan, Guo Xin and Ma Songfeng.

In men's singles, top seed and home favorite Lin Dan kept on course for his first world title by toppling Japan's Kohei Hayasaka 7-1, 7-4, 7-3, before his countrymen Zhu Weilun, Bao Chunlai and Xuan Chuan each booked a spot in the quarter-finals.

China's third seed Qiu Bohui, however, failed to make the fourth round, crashing to unseeded Indonesian Ardi Ardiansah 7-1, 7-1, 8-7.
