Pakistan Committed to Eliminating TerrorismThe Pakistani government is fully determined to strengthen free press as well as eliminate terrorism of all kinds from the country. This was stated by Information Secretary Syed Anwar Mahmood in a letter addressed to K. Cooper, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists while responding to the latter's earlier letter expressing concern over the recent bomb blast in Karachi Sales Office of daily Nawa-e-Waqt, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on Thursday. "The chief executive of Pakistan and his government is as much determined to strengthen the free press in Pakistan as it is to eliminate terrorism from this country in all its forms," Anwar Mahmood said. He added: "Such acts of terrorism are not peculiar to Pakistan. Terrorists, you will agree, have no frontiers as indeed they have no respect for the lives and properties of the people, leave alone the peoples' right to free speech." Pakistan, he said, has been subjected to acts of terrorism for many years. "The Government of General Pervez Musharraf is doing all it can to eliminate terrorism, which as you know, has many dimensions, not the least important being the situation in the region." He said Pakistan expects fullest support from the free press both in Pakistan and abroad for the government's endeavor to strengthen freedom of press and eliminate terrorism from the country.
