Top Chinese Legislator Meets Uruguayan Vice-President

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), met with Luis Hierro, visiting Uruguayan Vice-President and President of the National Congress on November 9 in Beijing.

Extending a welcome to the Uruguayan guest, Li said that although China and Uruguay are far apart geographically, they have maintained close relations.

The mutually beneficial cooperation in various sectors between the two countries has been further enhanced since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 12 years ago, Li noted.

He added that the two countries are also increasing their consultation and cooperation in international affairs.

The Chinese government attaches great importance to building relations with Uruguay, Li said, adding that China expects to work with Uruguay to push forward bilateral friendship and cooperation.

Li said that the contacts between the two parliamentary bodies have also been frequent during the past 12 years.

Exchanges of visit by legislators have deepened the understanding and friendship between the two countries, Li said, adding that he believes Hierro's current visit will further enhance the all-round friendly cooperation between the two countries and their parliaments.

Li said that China welcomes more visits to China by Uruguayan congress members.

Hierro noted that he visited China in 1985 and has seen new achievements in China's reform and opening-up drive during his current visit.

He described the bilateral relations as very good, adding that the two countries have made frequent high-level visits and bilateral trade has continued to grow.

Hierro said that the foreign policies of the two countries share many similarities.

He pledged that the Uruguayan government sticks to the "one-China" policy, adding that his government attaches great importance to developing ties with China.

He added, the purpose of his current visit to China is to push forward the friendly cooperation with China, especially the exchange and cooperation between the two parliaments.

Hierro invited Li to visit his country, and Li accepted the invitation with pleasure.
