Macao SAR Government Operates Well: Edmund Ho
Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of China's Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), said on November 9 that the SAR government has operated normally and practiced its administrative responsibilities well in nearly 11 months.
"Since the founding of the SAR, the central government has observed the 'one country, two systems' principle and supported Macao's development to great extent, and all residents have given active cooperation in our administration," he said in his policy address for 2001 at the Macao Legislative Council.
Following the power transfer, there was unprecedented challenge for the SAR government which lacks administrative experience while the territory suffered the most serious economic difficulty in decades, Edmund Ho said.
Despite all the difficulties and disadvantages, Ho said the SAR government has operated normally, and kept the society stable, the economy steadily growing, and public security improving.
Attributing the good administration to the efficiency of the civil service, he explained that the civil servants tend to have closer contacts with the residents and have higher sense of responsibility in their work.
"What is important is that we have conducted initial research and assessment about the administrative structure and the civil service system and completed the necessary first step for future restructuring and improvement," the chief executive said.
However, Edmund Ho pointed out that more efforts are needed. "As a responsible government, we will surely continue to absorb public opinion and make administration operate better," he said.
