Tibet to Develop Feature Economy of PlateauDuring the "10th Five-year Plan" period, Tibet Autonomous Region will give full play to its superiority and to follow the road of the feature economy in the massive development of China's western regions, thereby promoting the structural adjustment of industry and enhancing economic competitiveness.The recently passed Proposal of the Tibet Autonomous Region Committee on Formulating the 10th Five-year Plan for National Economic and Social Development states that developing the feature economy in Tibet aims mainly to develop tourism, Tibetan medicine, plateau feature bio-industry, green beverage industry, processing industry of agricultural and livestock products, minority handicraft industry, mining industry, etc. Since Tibet has gradually become one of the world hot spots of tourism due to its unique natural and human landscape, the proposal states that Tibetan tourism should establish the concept of excellence, strengthen the construction of infrastructures and the contingent of tour guides, improve service quality and extensively tap tourism resources, striving to turn Tibet into an international tourist resort. The Proposal calls for reasonable protection and scientific use of Tibet's medicinal resources, and effort to establish the country's largest base of Tibetan medicinal materials and set up a national R&D center for Tibetan medicine production. According to the Proposal, Tibet should give full play to its advantage of diversified biological products, develop processing industry of special resources and a series of green beverage industries and make major breakthroughs in the aspects of brands, economy of scale and market share. Considering that Tibet is one of the five major pastoral areas of the country, the Proposal also encourages the development of processing industry of agricultural and livestock products, minority ethnic handicrafts and mining industries.
