China's Rural Enterprises Face Strong Competition
A Chinese official has said that China's entry into the WTO would bring daunting challenges as well as welcome opportunities to the country's rural and township enterprises, which are a major engine behind the economy.
Jiang Yongtao, director of the Rural and Township Enterprise Bureau of the Agricultural Ministry, said at a meeting that the lack of experts and professionals in the rural enterprises are threatening their development.
He said that the leaders of a rural enterprise are usually farmers, often members of the same family, who know little about modern management.
There are more than 200,000 rural and Township enterprises in China, which generate one-third of the country's GDP and contribute to 40 percent of the export profits.
The take-off of rural and township enterprises have greatly pushed rural reform and increased the farmers' income.
However, Jiang said, because of their poor management, their ability to survive in the competitive international market will be tested.
He urged enterprises to create a modern enterprise system, employ talented people, and readjust their economic structures.
