Songjiang Export-oriented Processing Zone in Shanghai, one of fifteen national export-oriented processing zones approved by the State Council, was formally put into operation on November 8.

It is also the second such zone to be operational after Kunshan Export-oriented Processing Zone of Jiangsu Province.

The 1.98-sq.km zone is located in southwest Shanghai, a modern metropolis also known as an economic and financial center in east China.

The leading industry in the zone is the information industry, with the core activity being the manufacturing of portable computers. Currently, the zone has attracted twenty-five projects involving an investment of US$1.655 billion.

According to an administrator of the zone, the zone will boast an annual production value of US$15 billion and annual exports worth US$12 billion in five years.

Preferential policies, such as taxation and simplified customs service, are available in the zone.
