Gore Wants No Rush to Judgment in Vote Recount

US Vice President Al Gore said November 8 that the question of who won the presidential election must be resolved "without any rush to judgment."

"We still do not know the outcome of yesterday's vote and I realize that this is an extraordinary moment for our democracy," Gore told reporters in his first public appearance since the polls closed Tuesday.

"What is at issue here is the fundamental fairness of the process as a whole," he said. "Because of what is at stake, this matter must be resolved expeditiously but deliberately and without any rush to judgment."

"We now need to resolve this election in a way that is fair, forthright, and fully consistent with our Constitution and our laws," he said.

Election officials of Florida State of the United States were ordered to begin a recount of nearly 6 million votes Wednesday with the stunningly close presidential election between Texas Governor Bush and Gore in the balance.

The pressure on the recount was intense because Florida, with its 25 electoral votes, will decide the winner of the presidential election.

Gore himself thought he had lost when the broadcast networks projected Bush the winner in Florida and thus the nation.

Gore telephoned his congratulations to Bush. Then he called again and took his concession back.
