EU, Ukraine to Discuss Energy, Nuclear Safety

Ukraine and the European Union (EU) will discuss possible cooperation between them in the areas of energy and nuclear safety and a plan to shut down the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, DIANU news agency reported.

European Commission (EC) President Romano Prodi is expected to address these issues in discussions with Ukrainian leaders during his visit to Kiev scheduled for Thursday and Friday, DIANU said.

Prodi will meet Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, the leadership of the Ukrainian parliament, Foreign Minister Anatoli Zlenko, and Ukrainian scientists.

He is also expected to discuss practical implementation of strategic agreements, outline ways for further deepening strategic cooperation, discuss issues involving the expansion of the European Union, and exchange views on international issues of mutual interest.

During his stay in Kiev, Prodi will obtain firsthand information about the economic and political processes taking place in Ukraine. His talks with Ukrainian leaders may also focus on Ukraine's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization, the news agency reported.

Prodi's visit took place in accordance with the agreements reached during the Ukrainian-EU summit in Paris in September. Ukrainian government officials hope that Prodi's visit will provide Ukraine with an opportunity to demonstrate its economic achievements this year.
