President Jiang Meets Participants of People's Air Defense Conference

President Jiang Zemin met the delegates of the Fourth National Conference on People's Air Defense at the Great Hall of the People on November 8.

Attending the meeting were other Chinese leaders including Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing.

Jiang, who is also general secretary of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission, addressed the meeting after taking photos with the delegates.

The People's Air Defense is a major part of the national defense, a main component of modern urban building, and a social cause for the interests of the whole people, the president noted.

All the late Chinese leaders, including Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and Deng Xiaoping, attached great importance to people's air defense, while Zhou and Deng personally took charge of the issue as well, according to Jiang.

He urged the Party, government, and military departments of all levels to have a better understanding of the international and domestic situation, so as to give strategic priority to civil air defense.
