Neighboring Provinces Enhance Economic CooperationSouth China's Guizhou Province will strengthen its economic cooperation with its neighbor, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, as demonstrated by an agreement signed on November 7.In terms of electricity, Guizhou is abundant in thermal power while Guangxi is rich in hydro-power, and the two sides have planned to construct an electricity transmission line through Guangxi as a part of the "transmitting electricity from west to east" project. The two sides have agreed to speed up the construction of the Guiyang-Nanning Expressway and to link all highways in their bordering areas. In order to transport coal and other types of ore to Guangxi, the two sides have worked out a plan to build several railway lines linking Guizhou to southern China, especially to the coastal areas of Guangdong Province. Currently, Guangxi imports 6.6 million tons of coal from Guizhou annually. The figure is expected to rise to 8.5 million tons by 2005. The two sides plan to build mining bases in Guizhou and sales bases in Guangxi for the smooth distribution of coal. The agreement also covers cooperation in the development of the tourism industry, mining and trade. |
