US Republican Party Keeps Senate Control

The Republican Party retained its hold on the Senate for two more years on November 7, even as first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton swept to a history- making triumph by capturing a seat in New York for Democrats, US TV networks reported early November 8.

Though the Republican majority will be narrower than this year's 54-46 margin, a victory by two-term incumbent Conrad Burns in Montana ensured that Republicans would have at least 50 of the Senate's 100 seats.

Earlier, Republicans retained control of the US House of epresentatives, beating back a strong challenge from Democrats to hold a majority for the fourth consecutive Congress since 1994.
