China Calls for More Foreign Investment in Agriculture

Zhang Xiang, Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade And Economic Cooperation, has called for more foreign investment in China's agriculture.

He said at a recent meeting that China's agriculture will need some 28 billion $US annually over the next 10 years, and foreign investment will play a big role.

The official said that the Chinese government cannot ease the funding shortage by itself, and it will open various channels to attract foreign investment, particularly, foreign direct investment.

China is a big agricultural country which is feeding 27 percent of the population of the planet with 7 percent of the world's arable land.

Zhang said that it is imperative for China to expand opening up in the agricultural sector and participate in international cooperation.

The utilization of foreign capital will help increase farmers' income and improve management and farming, he said.
