Shanghai to Launch Medium-Term Chronic Disease Prevention Plan

Shanghai, China's leading industrial city, published Tuesday its 15-year plan on the prevention of chronic and non-epidemic diseases.

The plan indicates that the city has focused its main efforts, from the prevention of epidemic disease, to preventing chronic and non-epidemic diseases.

It is estimated that tumors, cardio-vascular diseases, lung disease and diabetes, four major chronic disease reported in Shanghai, have created losses to the value of 20 billion yuan (2.4 billion $US) annually.

Efforts will be made to prevent high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic lung disease, to curb the effects of tobacco and to provide palliative treatment of patients with developed tumors.

According to the plan, Shanghai is to establish a special fund for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases for poor citizens.

So far, the city is building its city-level, county-level and community-level networks for prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.

By the year of 2015, 80 percent of primary and middle schools in the city are expected to become nonsmoking ones.

According to the plan, the city will also make efforts to limit the sale of cigarettes and improve water, air and soil quality.
