Population Growth to Remain under Control in New CenturyChina will continue to implement its family planning policy in the 21st century, while amendments will be made to fit the new era, the spokesman for the State Family Planning Commission (SFPC) said November 7 in Beijing. The family planning policy, aimed at controlling population growth, should be combined with the country's strategy to achieve sustainable development, said Chen Shengli during a discussion with a group of Chinese and overseas correspondents. The current policy of "one couple, one child", launched in 1980, is expected to remain stable in the first decade of the 21st century, he said. The official said that China's population policy has been improved step by step over the past two decades. Since the 1980s, couples who are the only child in their family have been allowed to have a second child, he said. According to official estimates, China's population will reach 1.27 billion by the end of this year and 1.38 billion by 2010. |
