Syrian President Meets with Chinese Delegation

Syrian President Bashar al- Assad met on Monday with a Chinese delegation led by Yang Rudai, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Yang conveyed regards of Chinese President Jiang Zemin to the Syrian president, who also extended his greetings and best wishes to the Chinese leader and the Chinese people.

The two discussed ways to further develop bilateral relations and the situation in the Middle East.

Bashar expressed hope that Syria and China will strengthen their friendly ties and cooperation in all fields.

He also voiced appreciation for China's position on the Middle East peace process, noting that a strong China can make positive contribution to regional and international peace and stability.

Yang said during the meeting that China firmly supports the just cause of the Arab nation and works strenuously with the international community to push the Middle East peace process forward.

China supports Syria's right of recovering the Golan Heights, which was occupied by Israel in the l967 Middle East War, and appreciates Syria's backing for China in international affairs, Yang stressed.

Assistant Secretary General of Syria's ruling Baath Party Abdullah Al-Ahmar also met with Yang on Monday and exchanged views with him on the issues of mutual interest.
