Chinese FM Meets Moroccan Special Envoy

Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan met Monday with Abdelaziz Meziane Belskih, special envoy of the Moroccan King Sidi Mohammed, and accepted a letter from the king to President Jiang Zemin on the Middle East crisis.

Belskih briefed Tang on the current Middle East situation, and said that the Moroccan King, as president of the Jerusalem Commission, is concerned about the Middle East peace process.

Morocco holds that the Middle East situation is in a critical state, he said, adding that Israel should implement seriously the relevant resolutions and withdraw its armies immediately from the Palestinian autonomous region.

He noted that a more effective mechanism should be established to push forward the peace process, adding that Morocco has appreciated the efforts of China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, in promoting the peace process.

Tang said that Israel's action of using force recently has caused masses of civilian casualties and property losses, and the Middle East process was undermined. Chinese government expresses its concern and unrest about the situation.

In a message to the Palestinian leaders and Israeli leaders, President Jiang pointed out that violence and conflicts only further the hatred, and dialogue and negotiation can bring about hope and peace. China has expressed the stance in the U.N. and the other international occasions.

Tang said that China sympathizes with and supports the just cause of the Palestinians, and holds that the Palestinians have the right to build up their independent country according to the relevant U.N. resolutions, and China supports the Palestinians to enjoy the national self-determination right, including the right of building their own country.

He noted that China opposes any act of undermining the UN resolutions, and holds that the international community has the obligation to help the Palestinians restore national interests.
