UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Visit Mideast
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will travel to the Middle East to assess the human rights situation there.
According to a UN press release, the high commissioner will arrive in
Israel
on Wednesday and then go to the occupied Palestinian territories keeping in mind the outcome of the special session of the UN Commission on Human Rights held last month. She will also visit
Egypt
and
Jordan
.
Robinson said that she will take stock of the human rights situation and explore ideas for instituting and pursuing a dialogue on human rights. "I plan to convey to the parties the importance of developing a culture of human rights and tolerance, which I believe is the key to a peaceful and stable future in the region."
The high commissioner will report on her visit to the United Nations General Assembly and to the Commission on Human Rights.
