Indonesian Attorney Asks Police to Help Catch Soeharto's SonAfter three days of searching, Indonesian South Jakarta District Attorney on November 7 finally asked the national police (Polri) to help catch Soeharto's youngest son, Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, who has been a fugitive in a high profile graft scandal.Attorney General Marzuki Darusman said the South Jakarta District Attorney has sought help from the district police to search the fugitive who refused to meet the final deadline to surrender. "The South Jakarta Attorney Office has ordered police to catch Tommy as of Tuesday from 03:30 a.m. (local time). And at 07:30 a.m., the police has prepared administrative procedures to carry out the request and to take any necessary measures to take Tommy by force," Darusman told reporters here. "But we don't set a time table for the searching of Tommy," he added. Separately, chief of the national police intelligence section, Brig. Gen. Engkesman confirmed his side has received an order from the prosecuting attorney to find out the 38 year old man, who are believed to has been concealing himself in Jakarta. "Yes, we have received a letter from the attorney's office on such a thing (the searching of Tommy). And we are ready to do so," he said. Four days after his appeal for a pardon being rejected by incumbent President Abdurrahman Wahid, Tommy insisted not to surrender to be executed. Tommy's lawyers said that his client refuses to give up as the attorney failed to meet legal procedures for Tommy's execution. But such an excuse was strongly denied by Chief of the South Jakarta District Attorney Office, Antasari Azhar by saying that Tommy has received a copy of the presidential decree on the rejection of his appeal. In addition, Darusman said the police firstly would raid Tommy' s residence in Central Jakarta Menteng District where the family of former President Soeharto also live. "If the police fails to find Tommy there, the police would extend target area for searching," he said without elaborating. The former racer was found guilty, along with his business partner Ricardo Gelael, in a land scam graft scandal involving the State Logistic Agency (Bulog) in 1997 which caused around 11 million $US in losses to the state. The country's supreme court sentenced the ex-young play boy 18 months in jail and ordered him to pay an equivalent 3.5 $US in fine. Just unlike Tommy, Gelael has been spending his time in prison since November 3 just hours after he knew that his appeal for a pardon being rejected by the president.
