DPRK Urges US to Take Actions for Better Bilateral Ties

A signed article in the Rodong Sinmun newspaper on November 7 urged the US to take actions to push for the early normalization of relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.

The article reaffirmed that the DPRK will make sincere efforts to improve its relations with the US under the principles of mutual respect for each other's sovereignty and non-interference in each other's internal affairs.

The recent positive changes in bilateral relations reflect the wishes and interests of the two peoples and keep pace with the development of international relations, it said.

The article said that in recent years, the two countries have maintained various forms of contact and dialog.

Vice Marshal Cho Myong Rok, a special envoy of DPRK leader Kim Jong Il, visited the US in October and exchanged views with US President Bill Clinton and other officials on matters of mutual concern, and the two sides issued a historic DPRK-US joint communique that contains the wishes of both sides to improve relations, the article noted.

The two sides are duty-bound to implement the communique, which bears the force of international law, it said.

It is the common wish of the two peoples to normalize relations between the two countries, the article said.

It added that the improvement of DPRK-US relations does not only benefit the two peoples, but also helps ensure peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, as well as in the Asia-Pacific region and the whole world.
