Colored Sand Sculpture Festival to Be Held in China's InlandAn international festival featuring sculptures of colored sand will be held next March in Luliang County of southwest China's Yunnan province.Sand sculpture, which became popular more than 20 years ago, has become a hot tourist attraction in many coastal cities worldwide. The first China International Sand Sculpture Festival held in Zhoushan Island, east China's Zhejiang province, in October last year, brought 100 million yuan in local tourism income. Luliang County has a colored sand forest which covers dozens of kilometers, and the colors of the sand forest change with the seasons, under changing climatic conditions and from different angles. The colors also vary according to sunlight and moonlight exposure. World class sand sculpture masters will give demonstrations of their skills at the festival, which is jointly sponsored by Yunnan Provincial Tourism Bureau and Qujing City Government. Gerry K. Kirk, chairman of the World Sand Sculpture Association, said that the colored-sand-oriented festival will add a new dimension to the art of sand sculpture. The association now has 250 members.
