Britain on Alert for Attacks From Real IRA

The British police haven been on high alert after intelligence revealed that two units of the Real IRA, a breakaway group from the Irish Republican Army (IRA), were operating on the mainland, The Times newspaper reported Monday.

According to the report, Scotland Yard says the risk of an attack on the mainland has risen in the past two weeks, as the police and the intelligence agency, MI5, have noted increasing tension in Northern Ireland.

The Real IRA units could mount a range of operations from bomb attacks to assassination attempts. Potential targets, including politicians, have been told to be on alert.

Since there could be fire bomb attacks on stores during the Christmas rush, extra police are being deployed in key areas of London.

The IRA and other mainstream guerrilla groups are maintaining cease-fires, but armed dissidents on both sides have been blamed for sporadic violence.
