Chinese Badminton Coach Distances Himself from New Scoring System

Li Yongbo, head coach of the Chinese national badminton team, said here on Monday that he did not support the five-set, seven-point scoring system, which was introduced by the International Badminton Federation (IBF) to the World Junior Badminton Championships.

"Personally I do not support it," Li told reporters after China squeezed past South Korea 3-2 to win the team title of the biennial under-19 championships on Monday.

"It is too early to make a conclusion that the new scoring system is good or not. We should have it further tested in senior tournaments," said Li, who led China to four golds at the Sydney Olympics in September.

"Seven-point games may be too short for some shuttlers, especially for those slow-starters. Some may have yet to get excited when a game is over."

The experimental scoring system was introduced by IBF in an aim to make the sport more appealing for spectators and television.

The new scoring system didn't necessarily lead to shorter games. Monday's team final, for example, lasted for four hours and a quarter, which is even unusual under popular three-set, 15-point scoring system.
