Thailand May Lose Competitiveness to VN Over Rice ExportEven though Thailand is ranked the world's largest rice exporter, it may lose its competitiveness to Vietnam soon due to failure to boost productivity during the past three years, the Thai News Agency (TNA) said Monday.Deputy Prime Minister Supachai Panitchpakdi was quoted as saying that Thai rice export has been meager at about five to six million tons per year for years. Supachai, who is also the Commerce Minister, said that Vietnam had experienced a trend of rapid growth in rice export over the past few years. In 1999, Vietnam exported three million tons of rice to global market. |
