Philippine House Panel Decides to Recommend Impeachment Against President

Philippine House Committee on Justice decided Monday afternoon to recommend the impeachment complaint against President Joseph Estrada to the House plenary session scheduled for next Monday.

The House panel reached the consensus following one-day discussion on some technical problems concerning the impeachment complaint filed by 41 Congressmen on October 18.

For a trial to start, impeachment must be endorsed by at least one-third of the House's 218 members, or 73 Representatives. Congressmen attending the panel meeting said they have collected 99 signatures for the endorsement, of which 77 have been verified.

The impeachment case was triggered by an allegation made by South Ilocos Governor Luis Singson that President Estrada had received more than eight million US dollars worth of kickbacks from illegal gambling lords.
