HK External Trade Maintains Strong GrowthHong Kong's external trade continued strong growth in September, with both imports and exports posting double-digit percentage rise, according to statistics released Monday by the Census and Statistics Department.In September, the value of re-exports of goods increased by 26.4 percent over a year earlier to 134.3 billion HK dollars (17.2 billion U.S. dollars), and that of domestic exports of goods by 14.6 percent to 16.9 billion HK dollars (2.17 billion U.S. dollars). Meanwhile, the value of imports of goods rose by 25.4 percent to 156.4 billion (20.05 billion U.S. dollars). Comparing September 2000 with September 1999, the value of re-exports of goods to all main destinations registered double-digit percentage increases, with Canada taking the lead with a 33.8 percent rise, followed by Japan and the Republic of Korea. For the first nine months of 2000 taken together, the value of re-exports of goods, at 1,017.0 billion HK dollars (130.4 billion U.S. dollars), was 19.5 percent higher than that in the same period in 1999.
