Highway Being Built for Longtan Hydropower Station

Construction of a highway on the right bank of Hongshui River, the most important preparatory project for the construction of Longtan Hydropower Station on the same river, broke ground Friday.

Dai Xianjun, deputy general manager of Longtan Hydropower Development Co. Ltd, said the highway, which is being built by workers from Hydroelectric Engineering Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will be 8.8 kilometers long and will cost 34 million yuan (about 4.1 million US dollars).

According to Dai, some 800 million yuan (about 96.4 million US dollars) of investment has been spent in financing construction of preparatory works so far, and among the completed infrastructure are the Longtan Bridge and the 74-kilometer-long highway from Nandan to Longtan Bridge.

The projected Longtan Hydropower Station has been listed as one of the key projects in China's strategy to develop the vast west regions. It is one of 10 key power plants to be built to utilize hydroelectric resources on the Hongshui River. Planning and prospecting of the project began in 1958.

The hydropower station, which will be situated in Tian'e County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will have a generating capacity

of 5.4 million kilowatts and will cost 24.7 billion yuan (about 2.98 billion US dollars).

Construction of the hydropower station is scheduled to begin in the latter half of next year.
