Clinton's Meetings With Arafat, Barak Scheduled

U.S. President Bill Clinton will meet with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Thursday and with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak next Sunday in an effort to end weeks of violence in the Middle East, the White House said Sunday.

"The goal is to assess the situation on the ground and begin to find the way back to the negotiating table," White House spokesman Jake Siewert told reporters.

The spokesman made the announcement while traveling with Clinton Sunday in Arkansas on a campaign trip.

According to U.S. officials, Clinton's separate meetings with Arafat and Barak are expected to focus on the implementation of a cease-fire agreement brokered at an emergency summit at Sharm el- Sheikh on October 17.

There are no plans for a three-way meeting of the leaders in Washington.
